Subject X: Striations

for my subject x, I am focusing on striations. I have taken close up images of various items to show their fibres and I plan to mix these elements into one image.

I am loving the feelings these are giving me. I am both intrigued and disgusted (but in a good way). I am a big lover of sushi so the salmon has my heart. I think the use of lighting is great, especially in the close-up one, the orange of the salmon is definitely popping. I think the last picture is working really well in that I can’t tell what is happening. My only suggestion is to possibly brighten up the photos of the lemon (if that is what that is). I think maybe changing your camera settings could help with the overall brightness of the photo. I am excited to see your final images.

Hi Breanna! I really enjoy these pieces! The strong orange colour and juicy texture just looks delicious! I also love the closeness of these works, I feel like I can smell the oranges. I feel the orange pieces are your strongest works, the contrast with the darkness of the background and the addition of the background being apart of it at all. The directional lines in the works are magnigacent and really pull your eye around the image. Overall these works are lovely and really capture the texture of the orange and energy. Great work!

Haha didn’t realize the first two were salmon and not an orange sorry!

I love this idea! I appreciate artwork that focuses on little details of everyday objects.

The images of the salmon (totally thought it was an orange or something else citrus). The colours are so rich and vibrant and stand out so well against the black background. But unfortunately, I feel like the dark shadows and contrast make the little striations of the salmon hard to see. If you aren’t already using the macro lense, I think that would make a significant difference. The other suggestion is that you should use a larger F stop in order to make more of the subject is in focus. I’m not sure if this would help but maybe put a light behind the salmon? Hopefully that would brighten the subject and maybe be able to highlight the details of the meat.

The last image is also interesting. You captured so much detail and texture but I feel like the colour is flat. Which is what I would say about the lemons. Though the lemon striations are the clearest. They just lean more towards a common composition for this subject matter.
