I really enjoy your use of leading lines in this work! The vertical lines of the strings holding up your objects, and the shapes of the objects themselves, are very effective at leading the eye around the whole composition. Your sparing use of colour, both the red of the vinyl and the chromatic reflections on the CDs, also created more interest.
Your use of light and white negative space invokes a kind of Surrealist, dream-like state that gives me a sense of nostalgia and cherished memories. The shadow of the red vinyl helps amplify this effect by mimicking the effects of sunlight viewed through closed eyes. I get the sense that this work is a sort of abstract portrait of a person as viewed through their musical interests.
While I appreciate how you’ve used light, I think this series might be even stronger if you tried to create intense glares off of your more reflective disks, and experimented with white balance. If your intended effect was in fact to invoke nostalgia, a more yellow white balance might be effective here! I also think that your work might benefit from a stronger sense of depth (i.e. having some discs extremely close or far away, and out of focus compared to others). I’m really interested to see where you go with this Subject X!

Hi Emma! You did a great job positioning your objects to make a nice composition. All photos do this well, however, I can see this particularly in the second photo where the CDs are listed at different heights, profiles, and the use of light to create shadows that add to the photo. I also enjoy the variety of colours and sizes in the CDs and records used, especially the striking red one, and the shadows captured. The integration of both old and new music devices could suggest your love for music, but also the beauty of simplicity in music. Old doesn’t necessarily mean less valuable. This may not be your narrative but this is how I interpreted your work! I wonder if exploring more depth in the objects (almost entering a new world through closer objects) would make the experience with the photo more immersive, overall good job!

I really like the high concept of light and shadows being shown throughout your photos. The lighter shadows make a really nice and lively background that helps your object shine even more in the foreground. The red Vinyl specifically is really brings everything together adding an element to center and ground the entire piece around. In some photos the other white tech like the headphones become very hard to see and it makes the frame feel empty, that is my only main suggestion is to just make things like the earbuds contrast more to the rest of the background. Other than that I really like your subject X and am very excited to see your final piece (:

Hey Emma, I really like your subject x of different technology to play music and the way you have showcased it is really intriguing. I really like the continuity that these photos play with as discs are shadows are half cropped almost giving a sense that the frame goes on forever, this mimics technological evolution and I think that connection is really cool. On top of that the forms and shapes the different shadows take in the background fills it up and makes it feel alive, also allowing the items in the foreground to be highlighted more. I am especially obsessed with that striking red shadow made by the vinyl. My only suggestions would be to try and have one item be the focus of each photo as sometimes I find it difficult to find an easy starting point to focus my eyes on the photo (kinda like information overload) and the other suggestion would be to maybe add a bit more contrast to the white earbuds and cords as they do sometimes get washed out by the background and become hard to see. Other than that I really do enjoy your subject x a lot as I find myself wondering between photos, I am really excited to see your final results.
