Hi Ainsley,
I really enjoy your concept for Subject X. There are so many ways people express their love other than explicitly saying so. All your images are really interesting and evocative. My favourite images are the top two. The high contrast of the black background against the hands holding the white dog sculpture has a lot of emotional impact. The positioning of the hands so that they are cradling the dog give a sense of tenderness. In your second photo, it is engaging the way you have kept the images in the foreground and middle ground slightly blurred while those in the background are in sharp focus. This tricks my eye into believing there are physical people in the background. Very cool! I find that when the edges of photos are visible it draws my attention to the materiality and ephemerality of the object. Meanwhile, when the edges are hidden from view I feel as though I am transported into the time and place of the photo. Perhaps in the future you could experiment with creating more images that trick the eye with these objects, letters and photos. I’m excited to see what more you come up with!
Hi Ainsley! The theme of unspoken forms of love is so sweet, and I really feel the love you have for the people in your life in these works. The photo of the sculpted dog held by disembodied hands feels so warm — like a memory that you only remember fragments of. I think it’s a really strong piece out of the bunch, but I’m also enjoying the second and bottom photos (the ones with the photo albums). There’s a really beautiful emphasis on materiality with the curled pages, the shadows, and overlapping books. I think this calls back to your theme really well, showing the labour of love of creating a photo album and keeping members of your family with you even when those moments have passed. Going forward, it might help your idea shine brighter if you emphasize warm tones like you do in the first image. Every other image feels cool and sterile which does slightly take away from the theme of love — this is something you can also fix in photoshop pretty easily, so you can still keep the strong compositions you’ve already shot! Overall, I think these works are so sweet and I can’t wait to see how you translate this idea to a mural sized print!
Photography is so much about recording or document events, memories of friends and family in your life. It brings back memories and events from your experiences.
I like your way of showing people, calendar of time and photo albums with many events in life – sometimes hiding details that only the photographer has a complete knowledge of. Many times you look for written description or stories that go along with the photos of people. I find portraits is very fascinating and you have captured many great events and people that you love.
Great memories
