What keeps me looking in these photos is your use of strong contrast and emphasis on black – I think the second photo is your strongest for this reason, as well as the fascinating feeling of movement in the puppet strings. The way in which your figures appear to be emerging from a void is reminiscent of Baroque paintings in that it creates a sense of heightened drama and seriousness. I think another very strong image is your fourth one, as even without seeing either figure’s face, the gaze of the figure on the left creates a strong leading line that causes me to look around the whole photo. Your off-centre compositions also help to create and retain interest, as they allow the black background to create a looming negative space full of mystery and possibility. Looking at these photographs as a series, I feel as if the black setting signifies introspection, with the character in black clothing representing someone’s inner mind. More specifically, the roses and red nail polish lead me to wonder if this is a commentary on societal expectations of women.
I wonder if the sense of mystery you’ve created could be further emphasized by zooming in further on your subjects in a way that abstracts them and causes momentary confusion about what they are (for instance, cropping the upper edge of your second photograph so that only the nails are visible, and/or changing the orientation from landscape to portrait). While these photos are mysterious, I can mostly figure out what’s going on right away because the objects are pretty recognizable. However, you’re off to an extremely strong start! Good luck on your remaining photoshoots!

Hi Sloan! All of your images and objects are used to reflect your narrative very well. (the narrative that stood out to me). I particularly like your use of a black backdrop, creating depth into an unknown darkness, and also illuminating your subject. This sheds a directional and intentional light on only the objects you want to be explored. I feel because it is so effective, I would recommend continuing this if you decide to take more photos! The puppet and the hand reaching for the flowers gave me a feeling of uncontrollability, rejection or entrapment within relationships (all types of relationships). Overall your subjects and objects used are interesting in the way they interact with each other. For example, one person hugs the other and the other person is receiving the hug instead of returning it. I love the puppet photos and how the spotlight is emphasized on those two objects. Incorporating only these two elements going forward without the body in the frame may promote more contemplation as we are not able to see what exactly is happening.

Hii Sloan!! 😀 such amazing images!!! Your use of deep space and contrast are very mysterious and intriguing. The use of subject mixed with your use of light and dark very effectivly tell a story (manipulation, attachment, and betrayal is what I gathered). The use of a limited colour pallet help this narritive, with only reds and their complimentary greens (reds as the colour of love and intense emotion) as the added colour. My eye is struggling a lil with the flow of space (just in the first four images), which can be easily resolved with a tighter or vertical crop to better work with the line you created. I find blurring my eyes harddcoreeee while cropping helps so much when trying to assess the flow of light!!! Super awesomeness work!!!

I like the two first pictures and the control of the stickman and relaxing the control. The show of flowers as a sign of love, relationship and friendship. I think the play between a stickman that you have full control of followed by humans that are so much more complex and exciting.
The photos are well exposed and I like your composition and focus of the emotions at the time – quite suitable as valentine images “a gift of flowers”and the hug. Great photos with the simplicities that speaks volumes.
